Cost

What does an AI project cost?

A scoped AI project costs from €39,000 as a fixed-price pilot and is in production within six to eight weeks. The upstream Discovery costs a one-off €1,900 (fully creditable); optional operation runs from €1,900/month. What moves the price: data situation, integrations, requirements.

01

What you can budget for

  • Discovery (one-off, creditable): €1,900. Result: a sharpened use case, a feasibility assessment, and a concrete fixed-price quote.
  • AI pilot (one use case, 6–8 weeks): from €39,000. The exact price depends on the data situation and the depth of integration.
  • Optional operation after the pilot (monthly): from €1,900/month, depending on volume and SLA.
  • Larger or complex connections (ePA/FHIR, multiple integrations): on request.

A small, tightly scoped single feature can come in below that; an extensive, complex integration above it. We settle the exact scope in the first conversation.

02

Three stages, one path

The path to production AI has three stages. The AI Discovery (€1,900, one-off, fully creditable) clarifies the use case and the data situation. The fixed-price pilot (from €39,000, six to eight weeks) delivers the production-ready, integrated solution with source code. Optional operation (from €1,900/month) keeps it current afterwards.

03

Fixed price with full cost certainty

In the pilot, we agree a fixed price for a clearly scoped use case. You know before the start what the result will cost, with full cost certainty. The fixed price covers development, integration into your systems, the EU hosting setup, the AI Act conformity check, and the source code handover. If the scope changes, we discuss it openly and record it as a small, separate step. The agreed fixed price stays untouched.

04

Why from €39,000?

Proof-of-concepts for €10,000 to €30,000 are common in the market and often end up as a demo that never goes into operation. Our pilot is scoped differently. It is integrated into your systems, comes with source code, EU hosting, and an AI Act check, and is in use after six to eight weeks. You pay more than for a proof-of-concept, and in return you get software that stays.

We name prices on the website. That is rare in this market, but it spares you surprises in the first conversation.

05

What drives the price

  • The quality and accessibility of your data
  • The number and complexity of integrations
  • Accuracy and compliance requirements
  • Operation and scaling needs after the pilot

Funding: the programs active in 2026

The earlier federal programs “Digital Jetzt” and “go-digital” have expired. In 2026, funding runs mainly through the regional (Länder) programs, through ZIM, and through the research allowance (Forschungszulage). These programs are currently relevant for AI projects at mid-sized companies:

  • ZIM (Zentrales Innovationsprogramm Mittelstand): a non-repayable grant for development projects with a genuine innovation component. Since 2026, up to 35 percent of the personnel costs for external AI specialists are eligible.
  • DIGI-Zuschuss Hessen: 50 percent of eligible costs, up to €10,000. A €39,000 pilot sits below the program's €50,000 limit and is therefore eligible in principle.
  • Digitalbonus Bayern: 50 percent, standard up to €7,500, with a higher cap for innovative AI projects.
  • Research allowance (Forschungszulage): a tax-based incentive for development work, up to 35 percent for SMEs, and it can be claimed retroactively.
  • BAFA consulting funding: a 50 percent grant for the strategic early phase (max. €1,750).
  • Mittelstand-Digital centers: free, vendor-neutral initial consultation.

For companies in Austria, AI implementation projects are attractively funded too: aws AI Adoption subsidizes up to €150,000, and KMU.DIGITAL funds consulting and implementation with up to around €8,000. Whether funding is granted, and at what level, depends on the program and the individual case — none of this is a guarantee, and programs change constantly. Almost always: the application has to be submitted before the project starts.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What does an AI project cost for a mid-sized company?

A scoped AI pilot starts at a fixed price from €39,000. The exact price depends on the data situation, the integrations, and the requirements. Operation is billed separately.

What does AI consulting cost?

AI consulting is usually billed at day rates; €1,500 to €3,000 per day is common in the market, with no guaranteed outcome. appDev works with fixed building blocks instead: Discovery for a one-off €1,900, implementation as a fixed-price pilot from €39,000. You know the price before you commission.

What does AI cost for an SME?

A first production use case costs from €39,000 as a fixed-price pilot; the Discovery (€1,900) is credited against it. Funding programs lower your share: the DIGI-Zuschuss Hessen, for example, covers 50 percent of the costs up to €10,000.

Is an AI workshop worth it before the project?

A workshop provides orientation but no software yet. At appDev, that role is taken by the Discovery for €1,900: sharpen the use case, check the data situation, and end with a binding fixed-price quote. The amount is credited when you commission the pilot.

What funding is available for AI projects?

For the Frankfurt area, the DIGI-Zuschuss Hessen is especially relevant (50 percent, up to €10,000). On top of that come BAFA consulting funding, the Digitalbonus Bayern, or aws AI Adoption in Austria. We help you work out where you fit.

Do you also work with companies in Austria?

Yes. appDev works remotely with companies throughout Austria, with contracts under German law and hosting in the EU. We factor Austrian funding programs such as aws AI Adoption (up to €150,000) or KMU.DIGITAL into the project planning.

Why do you work at a fixed price instead of time and materials?

A fixed price gives you planning certainty and gives us an incentive to deliver efficiently. Both fit a clearly scoped use case.

Do we own the code?

On a commissioned project, the source code is yours, and the handover is part of the fixed price.

Do you help with funding?

We show you which programs fit your project and set it up so it meets the funding conditions. More on that on the AI funding 2026 page.
